Thyroid Nodules in TCM: Should I Be Worried?

Thyroid Nodules in TCM: Should I Be Worried?

Firstly, what is it?
A nodule is a growth of abnormal tissue. Nodules can develop just below the skin. They can also develop in deeper skin tissues or internal organs. Some people discover a thyroid nodule during a routine check up and wonder: Will it turn cancerous?

So here’s Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective:

Why do nodules form?
In TCM, thyroid nodules are considered a type of "goiter", often caused by:

  1. Emotional strain: Stress, anger, and worry stagnate liver qi and trap phlegm in the neck

  2. Poor diet + damp environment: Weakens spleen, creating phlegm and blood stasis

  3. Yin deficiency (esp. in women): Long term imbalances weaken qi and blood flow, leading to masses

What’s happening in the body?
Qi stagnation, phlegm buildup, and blood stasis are the root of most thyroid nodules. The liver regulates qi, while the spleen manages fluids. When they are disrupted, phlegm accumulates and blocks energy in the neck, forming nodules.

Over time, this can deplete heart and liver yin, causing irritability, palpitations, and fatigue.

TCM focuses on these patterns:

• Qi stagnation with phlegm: soft, movable nodules
• Phlegm with blood stasis: hard, uneven nodules
• Liver fire: irritability, red tongue, bitter taste
• Yin deficiency: insomnia, night sweats, fatigue

Watch for warning signs:
• Rapid growth
• Hard texture, irregular shape
• Heat symptoms, fatigue, swelling in legs
These could signal more serious conditions and require medical attention.
